Surge Protection Do it Yourself Check List

Check out the following before DESIGNING a Protection system

  1. Check the L-N, L-E and N-E voltages at the point s of installation with the approximate current of each phase (spot reading would be sufficient).
  2. It is required to check the above voltages under both mains and generator supplies.
  3. Check the harmonic current at the main breaker of the DB (if connected at a DB) or at the equipment (load current) being protected.
  4. Check whether there are any welding processes (regular or occasional use).
  5. Is there a local transformer.
  6. How far is the transformer HT earth from the earthing network provided for the SP.
  7. If coax cables protection is provided, obtain details of the video system (amplifier / distributor) to ascertain the gain of the system to determine whether there would be a signal drop when the SPD is connected.
  8. If telephone system protection is provided at the PBX, make sure that the jumpering at the PBX (MDF) is neatened up so that protected cables are not mixed with unprotected and earth cables.
  9. Resistance of an existing earth or of a trail earth

During Maintenance:

  1. Check the L-N, L-E and N-E voltages at the point s of installation with the current of each phase (spot reading would be sufficient).
  2. It is required to check the above voltages under both mains and generator supplies.
  3. Check the harmonic current at the main breaker of the DB (if connected at a DB) or at the equipment (load current) being protected.
  4. Check whether there are any welding processes (regular or occasional use).
  5. Inspect any corroded connections at the equipment connection points and earth connection and rectify if can be done within a short period (5-10 min) or record for correction by the client’s staff (especially if there is a risk of related problems).
  6. Resistance of the existing earth of the SP.
  7. Earth resistance at the common earth point (where SP earthing is connected) should be checked.
  8. Indications of all SPDs should be checked to see whether they are in working order.
  9. Fuses of SPDs are in good order and no corrosion at contact points.
  10. Check whether there are any surge inducing activities such as subsequently provided LPS, any unprotected power cables interfering with protected cables, etc.
